Azores temperatures are pleasent thanks to the warming influence of the gulf stream and the temperate maritime climate. Due to their location in the mid atlantic (about 1,500 km (950 mi) from Lisbon and about 3,900 km (2,400 mi) from North America) humidity is fairly high with plenty of wet weather from October thru to March. Weather conditions are changeable and one can often experience everything but winter weather in a single day. Different to the Portugal temperatures on the mainland at Lisbon which are warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter.
Each of the islands of the Azores has it’s own climate with localised microclimates produced by relief and shelter behind the mountains. The average annual rainfall decreases from west to east and ranges from 1600 to 700mms per year on average with much more falling on Mount Pico (The mountain of Pico on Pico Island, at 2,351 m (7,713 ft) in altitude is the highest mountain in Portugal).
Average temperature at Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island range between 11 and 16 degrees celcius in January and February and increase to between 18.7 and 24.8 in August. Rainfall is 99.6mms in March and this drops to 32.6 in July peaking at 136.3 in December. Lisbon temperatures are not as high as the Azores in the winter but in the summer time they reach higher with much less chance of rainfall.
